As the president and owner of Dorothy Draper & Co. Inc., Varney is associated with the restoration and decoration of hotels and resorts in Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and the U.S., including the Waldorf Towers in New York City and the Greenbrier Hotel & Casino in West Virginia. He redecorated the official Vice President’s residence in Washington, DC among other political design work.

His company has also been associated with the decoration of cruise ship and private plane interiors. Additionally, Varney designs dinnerware, crystal, scarves, and a line of furniture. His fabric designs grace the rooms of resorts and homes across America.

He appears regularly on Live Vividly – Carleton Varney on HSN and writes a weekly decorating column, “Your Family Decorator,” in the Palm Beach Daily News. He is the author of decoration and interior design books, a biography of Dorothy Draper, and two novels.  His latest book, entitled Mr. Color, features his latest commissions.

He obtained his BA from Oberlin College and the University of Madrid, and his MA at New York University. He also holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Charleston, West Virginia, and founded the institution’s Carleton Varney School of Art & Design.
