He has been a member of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging since 1978, and was a founding member, executive committee member, and secretary treasurer of the National Association of Senior Living Industries, now part of the Assisted Living Federation of America.

Shuster was the recipient of the 1987 National Association of Senior Living Industries Chairman’s Cup for outstanding service to the enhancement of life quality for older Americans, as well as of the Aging in America Top Corporate Award for lifetime achievement in the senior care industry.
